Ten minutes in the dark

Cara's phone pinged one last time from a farmhouse at the edge of the bog, and then it stopped. You go in after her with a pistol and a torch clamped under the barrel. The torch is the only light in the house. Where the gun points is where you can see, and nowhere else.

It's a short, linear demo: the porch, the hall, the kitchen, the study, the parlour, the stairs, and the darkroom at the end. About ten minutes, start to finish, and it will finish. Headphones on.

Light reveals, light burns

The beam is the gun's. Flood it wide to find your way, or focus it tight to see further down the hall. Batteries run down and you'll find a few spares, but never enough to feel safe. Doors are locked with padlocks, chains and hasps. You don't find keys. You shoot the locks off.

He's only there when you look

Nothing in this house roams. Every encounter is staged for the beam: the shape at the end of the hall that goes when the torch flickers, the one that sprints at your face, the noise behind you, and the thing that's an inch away when you turn back round. Silence does as much work as sound. Every sound has a place and a reason.

  • Six scares, each one built around the light and your own turn of the head.
  • Four locks between the porch and the darkroom. The gun opens the way.
  • The darkroom: her camera, photograph 47, and the flash. We'll say no more.

Made for the gun

With the mouse you look and click. With the Arkade Gaming Gun you point the real thing at the screen, and the torch under its barrel follows. Steadying the gun narrows the beam; the trigger fires; the side button raises Cara's phone. The pause menu and the title screen are worked with the gun too.
